Atopic Eczema

A skin condition linked to water
Atopic dermatitis is a chronic skin condition characterized by persistent inflammation and a weakened protective skin barrier. This alteration is mainly due to a deficiency of essential lipids and proteins, leading to extreme dryness accompanied by severe itching flare-ups.
Main Symptoms
The most common symptoms include:
-
Constant itching
-
Redness or eczema
-
Excessively dry skin
Typically, the areas most affected are skin folds, such as the inner elbows and the back of the knees. Over time, continuous scratching can cause significant skin thickening.
The Challenge of Water Contact
This dermatological condition poses a particular challenge when it comes to activities involving water contact. Factors such as water hardness, chlorine levels, mineral salts, pH, and temperature can further weaken the already fragile skin barrier of those affected, increasing the risk of irritation and flare-ups.
Water, although vital for life, can become a silent trigger of this condition. Prolonged or frequent showers, the use of chlorinated pools, or even simple contact with poor-quality water can disrupt the skin’s natural balance.
Instead of hydrating, excessive or improper exposure to water can strip away the skin’s natural protective oils, allowing irritants to penetrate and increasing sensitivity.
That is why, for those who suffer from atopic dermatitis, it is essential to take care not only of the frequency and duration of water contact, but also of its quality.
